- Intern - S&C Coach/Personal Trainer

Overview: Become Better Sport Performance and Personal Training is a private training facility located in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, PA. We work with a wide variety of clients to help them reach their health and fitness goals. These clients can be as young as 8 or as old as 90. We work with many kids who are also athletes looking to gain an edge in the sport they play. We work in a 1-1 setting along with a semi-private or open-gym setting depending on the client.
Facility Description: We have 5,000 square feet of training space, 2400 square feet of office/kitchen/Recovery Room space, and another 5,000 square feet of training space that we will expand into in the future.
- Training Area Equipment:

- 6 custom made 9 feet tall squat racks made by Bridge Built. Racks are connected with pull-up bars. Additional platform space is added to each rack for dual use. Competition grade plates will be attached to the racks. A variety of bars are available to use including competition grade Eleiko weightlifting bars (15 and 20k) and Powerlifting bars. Additional storage for bands and chains are also on each rack. Finally, large poles are added to the top for ring pull-ups and assisted jumps.
- A large custom storage unit for DB’s/Slam Balls/Kettle Bells. DB’s go as high as 75 lbs (soon to be 100 lbs).
- 15 feet wide blue turf. Half going 60 feet long and the other half going 100 feet long. 4 sled are ready to be used at any time along with a cement wall for medicine ball throws
- 2-3 each of Spirit Treadmills, Spirit Ellipticals, Concept 2 Rowers, Concept 2 Bikes, and Concept 2 Ski Ergometers
- Other: Lat Pull-Down/Low Row Machine, GHD, Safety Squat Bar, Multi-grip Bar, Trap Bars, Leg Extension/Leg Curl Machine
- Recovery Room/Office/Kitchen/Bathroom Area:
- 4 Bathrooms. 2 of which have showers.
- 500 square feet of lounge/recovery area equipped with a massive 85 inch TV and 2 other 55-65 inch TV’s. This area is also equipped with Normatec Compression Systems, Hypervolt's, Heat/Ice sleeves, and other recovery devices.
- The Kitchen is connected to the lounge and training area. Simple bars and protein shakes can be made here. A full size fridge will also be available for use for trainers and clients to store food.
- 5 other smaller offices will be used for various storage and general office use to write programs and talk to new clients.
Clientele Description: We have a wide variety of clients whose ages range from 8-90 currently. We have over 120 total clients. Our training is always geared towards the goals of the client. All of our programs are written for clients individually. Below is a list of some of the types of clients we work with:
- Kids 8-12: General purpose to teach proper exercise execution
- Middle school, high school, and college athletes: Still the main focus is to teach proper movements, but we definitely start to focus more on their performance in their sport.
- Baseball and Volleyball are the two main sports that we work with, but we have a little of everything.
- We are also partnered with the largest girls volleyball club in Pittsburgh.
- Amateur Powerlifters and Weightlifters
- Marathon Runners
- Disabled Clients who are in a wheelchair
- General Population of any age both male and female: Goals are typically basic such as weight loss and strength improvement. Especially as the clients get older they tend to have more issues that we have to work around. Some of these issues include:
- Knee, Hip, and Shoulder replacements
- Those recovering from heart attacks
- Dementia
- Asthma
- Other inflammatory issues such as Tendonitis or Arthritis.
* We also work with Physical Therapists who work out of our gym when needed to help deal with client injuries.
Job Duties:
- Interns primary duty will be to assist in training of all clients.
- This will include working 1-1 with some
- Assisting other coaches with larger groups, or running it
- Monitoring our “Semi-Private Training" clients.
- Interns will also be given the opportunity to create workout plans for a variety of athletes or other clients.
- General maintenance/cleaning WILL NOT be a priority. However, all of us will work together to make sure the facility stays organized and clean.

What Interns Can Expect To Gain:
- Increased knowledge on how to work with a wide variety of clients (see clients we work with above).
- Practical experience in programming for athletes and the general population.
- The ability to better adapt workouts and programs around client limitations or the lack of consistency that some clients unfortunately have.

Schedule: Part or Full Time Available
- Our/Your weekly schedule is mostly dictated by clients and their schedules.
- You will have some ability to choose the hours you prefer, but some specific hours may be required when we are the most busy. In general, we are flexible on scheduling.
- We offer training sessions 7 days/week
- Monday-Friday: ~8:00 am - 9:00 pm
- Sat/Sunday: ~9:00 am - 12:00 pm
- Schedule with the volleyball club varies depending on the time of year.
Pay Structure/Time Frame: This is a paid position. $2000/month stipend (for full time) will be given to help cover all living expenses. We expect interns to be around for ~ 3 months. This time can vary depending on what might be needed for college credit. Opportunity for employment after the 3 months will be highly considered if desired.
Requirements
Certifications/Degree:
- Have or working on a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology or equivalent years of related experience
- CPR/AED Certification
- Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) from National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), or National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) preferred (CSCS)
Skills Needed:
- Large amount of knowledge on exercises and how to perform/teach them
- Having the ability to adapt these exercises when needed
- Experience with programming for athletes or the general population is not required, but would help. We are happy to help teach these skills
- Willingness to also workout.
- You don’t need to workout with the clients, but clients prefer to see other trainers who are also able to do the things that they are asked to do.
- Ability to be personable.
- Being able to converse and be friendly with clients is important for clients to like and trust you.
- Anatomy/Physiology background to help in explanation of why we do certain things
