JOB OVERVIEW

The Director of Education and Community Engagement is USUO’s leader in holistically guiding our multi-faceted educational efforts to welcome our communities into understanding who we are and what we do.  We are seeking a dynamic leader with vision, energy, and creativity.  Our uniquely integrated symphony and opera organization presents an exciting opportunity for this individual to engage Utahns across a breadth of musical experiences and programs with the aim of spurring our communities to lifelong learning.  This director will be responsible for the department’s creation and implementation of all programmatic and financial goals.  While practically managing the department’s day-to-day operations, we also expect the director to proactively envision, plan, project, and track reporting to ensure successful initiatives that embrace community needs and align with organization-wide goals.  In these processes, the Director will strengthen internal communications to develop and promote educational and engagement activity among all branches of USUO.  The Director and team will work diligently to develop and maintain meaningful relationships with local educators, legislators, and donors to successfully uphold and further bolster USUO’s status as a strong partner and leader in music education.



Requirements

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Public Liaison and Reporting to the Public

  • Act as liaison in all USUO Education efforts, most particularly to Utah State Office of Education (USOE) and Membership in Professional Outreach in Public Schools (POPS) program.
  • Prepare opera and symphony annual reports for USOE and legislature.
  • Participate with POPS partners in all meetings, presentations, and peer reviews.
  • Foster lasting relationships with Local Education Agency’s Arts Coordinators, including charter schools.
  • Collaborate with USUO Development staff in annual legislative efforts.
  • Prepare donors’ reports and assist with grant writing as needed.
  • Represent USUO in public engagements including Symphony & Opera docent presentations, “Inside Opera” talks, annual original workshops for teachers, remarks at concerts, and other events.

Program Management

  • Direct all Symphony Education Programs: Manage, delegate, and oversee program, budget, and operational responsibilities for all symphony education concerts.
  • Oversee Opera Resident Artist (RA) Program: balance outreach and learning opportunities for RAs, direct logistics for visiting stage directors/mentors, and plan Utah traveling concerts.
  • Opera Education Programs: manage programming and scheduling programs in schools; create programs and train Opera Resident Artists for presentations; manage statewide rotation plan through schools/school districts.
  • Original Opera Program: hire and manage teaching artist composers & music mentors, arrange and publicize summer workshop experience for teachers, produce annual Children’s Opera Showcase, support and attend school projects and performances.
  • Opera-tunities Program: oversee publications targeted for schools, create docent materials, schedule docent presentations.
  • Manage Education efforts supporting USUO mainstage opera productions, Adult Outreach Projects, Deer Valley, and various special projects (Autism concerts, Alzheimer’s collaboration, and others).
  • Work with staff on and approve symphony education materials.
  • Create materials to help teachers prepare and evaluate their students’ learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with USUO departments and partners to prepare and finalize publications for all Education initiatives (programs, advertisements, symphony and opera playbills, etc.)

REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Proven record of leadership and management in music education.
  • Excellent verbal, aural, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and remain flexible to department urgencies when appropriate.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, and Google Suite Tools.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends required.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in music, fine art, arts administration, education, or a related field; Master’s degree or further education in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a music educator required; preference given to individuals with at least 5 years of experience managing or directing educational programs.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with both symphony and operatic repertoire.
  • Proven record of successfully working with staff, musicians, artists, and civic engagement.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google suite.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods of remaining stationary and working on a computer.
  • Able to move equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
