Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth mental health assessments tailored to the older adult demographic, with a keen understanding of their unique emotional and psychological needs.
- Craft and execute personalized treatment plans that address cognitive changes and incorporate physical health and social factors, enhancing the therapeutic experience.
- Provide evidence-based therapeutic interventions through individual and family therapy sessions, focusing on prevalent geriatric psychiatric conditions.
- Collaboration with geriatric psychiatrists and healthcare professionals to ensure an integrated and holistic approach to patient care.
- Deliver crisis intervention support during mental health emergencies, ensuring immediate assistance and appropriate follow-up for elderly patients.
- Educate patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment pathways, and resources available within the community to support their needs.
- Maintain meticulous and confidential documentation in alignment with legal and ethical guidelines, ensuring compliance with health regulations.
- Participate actively in case consultations and team meetings to share insights and foster collaborative problem-solving.
- Stay updated on current research and advancements in geriatric psychiatry, adapting best practices into your daily work.
Patient Population / Client Focus
This position focuses primarily on assisting the geriatric population, addressing a wide range of mental health issues that this demographic may face. As a mental health counselor, you will work closely with elderly patients who often confront complex emotional and social challenges. Building rapport and establishing trust are essential components of your work, as many patients may be navigating difficult transitions in life, affecting their mental wellness.
Qualifications
- A Master's or doctoral degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, or Psychology from an accredited institution is required.
- Current valid licensure as an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), or LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist) in the state of Oregon.
- A minimum of two years of post-licensure experience in mental health therapy, ideally within geriatrics.
- Strong understanding of geriatric mental health disorders, including familiarity with evidence-based treatment modalities.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct family and individual therapy specifically targeted toward elderly clients.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, showcasing a patient-centered and empathetic approach to care.
- Proficiency in utilizing electronic health record (EHR) systems as well as general computer applications required for client management.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team, contributing insights and collaborating on patient care.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working within a geriatric psychiatry setting or similar environment focused on elderly mental health care.
- Background in providing crisis management and intervention strategies for older adults in distress.
- Familiarity with community resources specific to mental health support for the elderly, enhancing patient education and advocacy efforts.
Compensation and Benefits
This role offers a competitive salary ranging from $75,000 to $100,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
