- RN: Float to different MS units throughout the hospital
- MS 1 General Surgical
- Bed: 18
- MS 2 Cardiac Neuro
- Bed: 18
- MS 3 Oncology
- Bed: 18
- MS 4 Ortho
- Bed: 16 (MS4W-10; MS4E-6)
- 3W PCU
- Bed: 16
- Surgical Surge Unit: Admission Holding Unit
- Bed: 14
- ED Holding
- CNA: Float to any units within the hospital
- All ICUs, Stepdowns, MSUs, Overflow, ED holding, ED
- Wherever they are needed

Patient Types:
- MS 1 General Surgical: SBO, hemicolectomy, thyroidectomy, prostatectomy, mastectomy, Client, COVID, respiratory, sepsis, cellulitis, IVDA, BiPAP, CPAP, nitric oxide, cardiac/neuro overflow, Cardizem drip
- MS 2 Cardiac Neuro: Cardiac Tele (post cath, CHF, A-fib), Neuro (strokes, TIA, ALOC, dementia), General Medical (sepsis, Client, COPD, DKA, AKI)
- MS 3 Oncology: Neutropenic, various cancers, psych, general medical (COPD, CHF, sepsis, DVT, AKI, dialysis)
- MS 4 Ortho: Post-surgical ortho (total joints, ORIF, external fixation), other post-surgical (GI, GU, GYN, ENT)
- 3W Cardiac Tele: Functioning as a cardiac stepdown unit for high acuity medical, surgical, cardiac patients
- Post cath, 24h post open heart, SVT, A fib, sepsis, bariatrics, CKD/HD
- Observation: Chest Pain, Post Cath, back pain, post surgical, general observation stay with goal of 24 hour or less stay
- Stable fresh surgical patients that have gone through phase 1 & 2 of PACU
- Post-surgical:
- Ortho: total joints, ORIF
- GI: gallbladder removal, GYN, vascular
- GYN, plastics, ENT
- No ICU patients
- No vented patients
- Goal of less than 24h turnaround time
- This is NOT PACU overflow-does not need PACU experience
- Inpatients requiring admitted bed, general medical diagnosis
- Cardiac/Tele monitoring
- ED Holding extension
- General medical patients that are waiting for a MS bed
Patient Ratios:
- RN: Day - 1:5, Night - 1:6
- CNA: Day - 1:6 , Night - 1:9
Required Certifications:
- RN M/S and RN Tele:
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIH
- CNA:BLS
- WI license
Skills required
- RN: Good general med/surg skillset needed.
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation, drain management (JP, hemovac), NGT placement and management, central line management (PICC), CBI, dressing changes, wound care, wound vac
- Tele experience required
- CNA: Prioritizing patient safety, knowledgeable on various lift equipment, assisting with daily activities (feeding, bathing, ambulating, toileting, weighing), able to measure/document I/O, assist with admissions/transfers, collection of specimens (stool, urine), able to use EMR, blood sugar checks, maintaining skin integrity (turning patients), putting patients on tele monitor, proper documentation
Support on the Unit:
- Charge Nurse, takes patient assignment (Day-1:2; Night- 1:4-5)
- Unit Secretary (0700-1900)
- RT 24/7
- Hospitalist available 24/7
- Phlebotomy: Peripheral draws; RN: central line
- Centralized telemetry monitoring, with tele tech
Charting System/Equipment:
- EPIC (preferred)
- Alaris
- Pyxis
Floating:
- MSUs
- Surge Overflow (LTACH patients, MS)
- ED holding
- Surgical Surge Unit
- ICUs
- Sitter
- RN: will not take patient assignments, or medication administration when floating out of their scope of practice (ICUs-helping hands, taskers, runners)
- RN: will float to where any MS patients are located (birth center, ICU, etc)
- RN: Will provide care within their scope and below
Orientation:
- NM will choose what MS unit to orient to
- 1 shift of orientation
- 1st Day: Meet Nurse Educator Patti for NEO
- Remainder of the shift with preceptor
Scheduling:
- Weekend rotation: Every other
- 6-week schedule at a time, receive 1-2 weeks prior
- Shift time:0700-1930;1900-0730
- RTO: Email Nurse Manager Amanda Fleck
- No on call, but low census is tracked per contract with 36 hours cancellation per 13 week contract.
- Holiday Expectation: every other based on start date and department needs
